Student Restraint Handbook!?

I am looking for student restraint handbooks on the web.

ANY ONE KNOW OF ANY WEBSITES?

If you are wondering what I am talking about this has to do with very agressive students who will try to harm others.

The handbook will show me what holds to put my students in.

Student Restraint Handbook!?
It sounds like you're looking for Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training BUT...

You can't do these holds without being certified. It's a two day training, and your district should offer it if you are allowed to do it.

If you're not certified you should not be holding students. YOU are the one who can and will be sued by their parents, and YOU are the one who will lose your job, house, future income, etc. There's also a good chance you will get hurt if you haven't practiced the holds with a certified trainer.

In all honesty, the training isn't that great - many of the holds and techniques are ineffective and if the kids are very violent you may need a CPI team to respond. The good thing about the training is that in our district, if you have the training, and you do the holds, you're covered and the district will defend you.

Check with your district for their official policy, document issues with these students, and above all else, cover your butt! You don't want to be the next teacher on the 6:00 news!

Here's the web site for more information:

Reply:You need to consult the office of special education in your district.

Each district has their own policies on restraint.

Since there are many different methods and programs, you need to find out which are approved by your Board.

In this case, liability is a heavy issue. CYA, my friend.

If your district does not have a policy (God help them), perhaps you and your coworkers can request a professional development day or session to address this issue.

I would seriously discourage anyone from attempting to use restraints with students unless they were properly trained. Restraint holds can be dangerous (even fatal) for the student as well as staff, if improperly managed. Our district requires training and a refresher every year!
Reply:Your school district should provide this training. It doesn't take 2 days. It takes only one day and you do get certified. Here is the website. In order to restrain a student you have to be quick otherwise that student has you. Usually for students who are more adult size there is a team to do this since one person can not get an out of control child their own size restrained. These skills should have been taught to you.
Reply:A word of advice--for your safety and that of the students. You cannot get self-defense skills out of a handbook or from a few minutes scannining material on the web. If you are serious about this--do i t right or don't do it at all--hand -to hand combat is not a video game. Find a reputable martial arts school and explain to them what you are looking for--they can advise you on a course of instruction.

Otherwise, you will only get yourself hurt--or injure a student, possibly seriously.
