I'd like to improve graduate student social life. Any suggestions?

I go to a largish university and the graduate student social life is disappointing. We all seem to be fragmented and doing our own things, only with students in our departments. The engineers never really get to meet the film students, and the law students never hang out with the biochemists. How does one help to create a better sense of community? I'm interested in online proposals (e.g. facebook - but grad students tend to shun it as an undergrad thing) in addition to the more traditional options. A graduate student activities center or student center in the middle of campus would probably be ideal, but there's no money for it. Any ideas?

This is the way it works in corporate America. You are being assimilated.
