Student TASERed For Not Showing I.D: Yet Another Example of Abuse of Power?

A cell phone captured video of a 23-year-old student being administered multiple Taser shocks by UCLA police on Tuesday.

According to the Daily Bruin, the student did not show ID to community service officers who were conducting a random check. UCLA police said the student was released by police after he was cited for obstruction/delay of a peace officer in the performance of duty.

The paper reported that the student complained when an officer was escorting him from the lab and put his hand on one of the students arms. He allegedly yelled, "Get off of me," according to the paper. He was then shot with the Taser.

The Daily Bruin reported that after he was hit, the stdent yelled, "Here's your Patriot Act, here's your f---ing abuse of power."

Police said they thought he was not harmed in the incident. "If he was able to walk out of here, I think he was OK," the sergeant said.

You be the judge.

Student TASERed For Not Showing I.D: Yet Another Example of Abuse of Power?
Every UCLA alumnus should call the UCLA President's office (310-825-4321) and let Pres. Robert C. Dynes and Chancellor Norman Abrams know that you will withhold all contributions until the police officers are fired.

A university is usually far more tolerant and respectful of students' rights, and far more restrictive on police brutality, than outside the university gates. In Mexico, police are not allowed on a campus at all unless requested by the Chancellor. Having worked in universities for the past 20 years, I can safely say the behavior of the UCLA PD as exhibited in the 6-minute video (not 10 seconds) is inexcusable. They could have dragged the guy out, let him scream all he wants. If he resisted phsycially, they could have handcuffed him -- for 200 years our police did not need tasers or pepper spray to handcuff people. (Maybe he was already handcuffed when they Tasered him, which is even less excusable.)

There is a big difference between being tased once (often by a low-voltage) in a test situation and having it done to you multiple times in a row in a hostile situation. There have been 73 deaths associated with tasers between 1999 and 2004. Even police officers in five states have sued Taser International claiming they "suffered serious injuries after being shocked with the device during training classes." http://orlando.injuryboard.com/defective...
Reply:That's why the Republicans lost the midterm elections. Because America is getting tired of Nazi behavior like this. Repeal the patriot act and teach the police some civility for a change.
Reply:Soon it will be illegal to refuse to confess to any crime you are charged with and torture will be allowed to secure a confession .

Do not forget about the retired 65 year old black school teacher who was beaten by police in New Orleans and the reporter who was shoved and cursed at by police .

We live in a police state that is just not evident to most people .

In fact most of them like it .

80% of Americans would want drug dealers and rapists interrogated by any means to gain a confession .

What does that tell you . This means only 20% of the people are still free in their mind and the rest are already victims of the police state mentality .
Reply:The terms you are using would indicate there was more than one police officer, therefore they were not justified in tasering the student even if he probably was a terrorist based upon his name. How do you like the way i condemned the police while at the same time engaging in racial profiling.
Reply:The Constitution has been abused and this is going to be common place in America.
Reply:Well, all I can say is that UCLA police will be out of a million dollars in the near future. The training in these officers was lacking. A taser shot can incapacitate a person from 5 to 15 minutes. When, he did not get up from the floor they tasred him again. While he was handcuffed, they tasered him 5 times. In anyone's dictionary this would be excessive. Yes the kid had an attitude but this still was excessive.

Lord L is being a racist. Logger, if u think logically, tasering someone 5 times who is alread handcuffed is excessive. You would probably be ok if they killed him because he is young and bratty. Thomas E, he was on his way out when they tasered him. He was protesting because one policeman put his hand on the student's arm. Most likely, he did not liked being touched. The student was obviously stupid but that does not justify tasering a naive brat for 5 times while he was handcuffed.
Reply:All he had to do was show I.D. - is that so difficult? Possibly an abuse of power - but definetly an abuse of freedom by the 'student'. Freedom isn't free, and as far as I am concerned, if you aren't blond haired and blue eyed in southern California, you damn well better expect the police to ask you to prove you are here LEGALLY. If the same thing happened in Iran, Iraq, Syria, China, Russia etc, would it be considered 'abuse of power'? No, it wouldn't. Only in the USA is it considered 'big brother' - grow up - geez, to think I am a liberal saying this.
Reply:Law suit extraordinaire. This is why we need stricter guidelines for these rent a cops. Certain personality's shouldn't be allowed to have positions of authority. These second class mentality's need jobs like green glass sorter or led paint tester.
Reply:The taser is becoming just the latest way cowards on the force pretend to be tough. True.
Reply:POOR GUY,THANK GOD HE WASNT A BOOK OVERDUE
Reply:How close ARE we to being "V For Vendetta"?
Reply:It's okay, Bush said it was alright.
Reply:Wrong - certainly.

Anyone interested in considering the other flip of the coin? Understaffed campus police trying to maintain a minimum level of security identify a student(? - as they would see someone w/o ID) who is surely and at least verbally abusive. Hmmm - it really does take 2 to tango and to tangle.
Reply:POLICE SHOULD NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO ELECTRICUTE SOMEONE. THEY DO NOT KNOW THE LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF TAZER USE ON PEOPLE BECAUSE IT HAS RECENTLY BEEN ADOPTED BY POLICE DEPARTMENTS.

I SAW THE VIDEO AND WAS HOPING THE OUTRAGED STUDENTS WOULD OF GANGED UP ON THE POLICE AND KILLED THEM FOR THIS CRIME AGIANST HUMANITY.

JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE REFUSES TO COOPERATE WITH YOU DOESNT MEAN YOU GET TO ELECTRICUTE THEM. FOR GOD SAKES WE USED TO KILL PEOPLE THAT WAY.

AS IF THE STUDENT WAS THAT MUCH OF A RISK TO THE COPS HEALTH. WHAT A BUNCH OF ******* TAZING SOMEONE FOR REFUSING TO SHOW ID. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO JUST PUTTING SOMEONE IN HANDCUFFS. WHY DIDN'T THIER FAT, DOUGHNUT-EATING AZZES JUST PICK HIM UP?

I AM ONLY 22 AND I AM TERRIFIED OF MY GOVERNMENT AND ITS UNRELENTING POWER. THINGS NEED TO CHANGE. OR THERE NEEDS TO BE ANOTHER REVOLUTION!!!!!!
Reply:oh yeah i totally saw that so not right in many ways a lot of cops are unfair..i dont think they did a right thing they should get punished...but then again its their job to keep people safe of weird suspicious people
Reply:its merely a tickle now, but i still dont like it
Reply:I have heard this story and believe the officers were in the right. They had asked the young man to please show his school ID. He said he didn't have one on him. They request that he leave the premises. He did not. They ask a second time. He stays. They call campus police and they ask him to leave. He doesn't comply. So they used a tasser weapon to take him down. They were doing so in the best interests of the students. They should be praised for their reserved manner.
Reply:I don't agree. After viewing the recording on the link, Mostafa Tabatabainejad (the student in question) was asked for his ID (the computer lab being a controlled access area). Upon failure to produce the ID, it was security's job to escort him out of the controlled area. Mostafa resisted. Mostafa received motivation to leave the lab area. The lab security team has a responsibility. The rules they are there to enforce are well known. There are a lot of other Mostafa's in the world who aspire to be a bomb. Those Mostafa's wouldn't have ID badges either.
Reply:What does that have to do with the Patriot Act? They kid did not show ID, and plus, a few police men were doing things like that before the Patriot Act.

The kid broke the law

Funny how you libs think the law should be allowed to be swayed, then you say Bush committed all of these crimes, because he swayed the laws

Hypocrisy at its finest
Reply:all over an ID why didnt the guy show the ID? why was he being escorted from the lab? no ID? why didnt he just go with them or show the id if thats all it was about. he was being stupid and ignornant to get a response like he did. you think he might have a few brian cells hes in college.
Reply:he had it coming

Student teacher with disabilities!?

I am a Senior Elementary Education major with just student teaching left, but my advisor and another professor told me that I am not able/passable as a student teacher because of my Learning disabilities, %26amp; ADHD. They suggest changing majors now! All I want to do is just graduate I know I can do it with modifications and some extra help. I would like to know what type of modifications they are allowed to give me for my student teaching? Also, is a person allowed to student teach in a non-standard style of school, like a Montessori school? Also can you student teach in a resource class? I live in IL. Advise me what to do please!

Student teacher with disabilities!?
You need to speak with an attorney. They are VERY incorrect about the matter. Also, visit your state's Rehabilitation Services Office and speak with them about your plight. And, at the college or university that you attend, look for the Student's with Disabilities Service Center -- they should be able to explain it to your advisor and anyone else. They will not be permitted to accept federal funding if they refuse to allow you to pursue your interests to the best of your ability. Your advisor is living in the 'dark ages'.

As a matter of fact, my English professor at college level admitted to having ADHD.

Copy this and take it with you...show it to anyone doubting your right to an education irregardless of disability.
Reply:You do not say what your disabilities are. Unlike grade school and high school, college does not change its requirements for students due to learning disabilities. It can modify how information is presented but not the base requirements. You will have to do the same amount of student teaching as anyone else. You can not use your disability to say you can not teach a whole class or day. You have to be able to do everything another student teacher has to do, that is central to the job. That means correcting papers, student management, lesson plans etc. and done on time. You need to be able to stay in the classroom for the entire time and do all your paperwork by yourself because you will not have help once you are hired. That being said, I would look into who at the college advised you. I am sure your disabilities are not new and the dept had to know about this ahead of time. You should have been doing class observations and short help - where were your advisor and professor then? I would get a lawyer because if they led you on to believe that you would get that help while student teaching they misled you. Student teaching is mandatory. Period.
Reply:You may be entitled to modifications and extra help for in-class work, but there's no way you're allowed to have them during the time you spend in a classroom doing student teaching. Contact the university's Disability Resource Center and ask for help. Your school may have a Student Legal Center where law students help you with legal troubles- try them too.
Reply:Wow, I'll just say that your college / university / institution of higher learning screwed you unbelievably! Your so-called 'disabilities' surely didn't appear overnight, presumably you've had these for years. And your advisor / professor, knowing these facts, allowed you to proceed through 7 semesters of college tuition payments? -- to what, bar you from completing your degree? I suppose all they wanted was an easy way to bilk you and your family out of thousands of dollars.

My suggestion is for you to refuse to change majors. Absolutely refuse their (worthless) advice. Demand to meet with the superior of either one and present your argument until you achieve a satisfactory response. Continue to move up the chain of command if need be. All else fails, go to the media -- a story about how colleges and universities are defrauding students out of their tuition money might make it to your local paper or television news outlet.

Downplay that whole "All I want to do is just graduate I know I can do it with modifications and some extra help" angle though. Whoever told you that a college should be required to allow you "modifications and extra help" did you a grave disservice. It's time to join the real world now. Life / nature / reality doesn't allow modifications... it deals with all living things dispassionately, as it should.

Good luck.
Reply:that is aboslute bull ****! That is discrimination. I have never heard of that. I would speak to someone over your "advisor". The college should have a student services for people with learning disabilities %26amp; other disabilities to help you out.

Good luck

Query is returning the ID from "Students" table, instead of returning name of the student from "Marks" table.

In Access 2003, I have two tables i.e. Students and Marks.

Students is simply the list of students while Marks is the list of total marks each student earned in a certain exam. Marks table uses the names from the Students table. In Marks, I have a field called StudentID (with Number Data Type) which retrieves the names of the students from Students table using their numerical primary key (I copied this technique

from Northwind.mdb sample file).

I have written a VBA procedure which should pick top ten students based on their marks from Marks table and put their names in another table called Archives. In my VBA code I have put following SQL code:

SELECT MIN(Topper) AS Second FROM (SELECT TOP 2 [Marks].StudentID AS Topper FROM [Marks] ORDER BY [Marks].MarksCount DESC);

This SQL chunk should be run 10 times and the number SELECT TOP 2 (here it is 2) should be different as 1 should return highest scorer student, 2 should return second highest and so forth.

What am I missing here?

Query is returning the ID from "Students" table, instead of returning name of the student from "Marks" table.
Assuming MarksCount is the field that contains the sum, and that the primary and foriegn keys are both named StudentID:

SELECT TOP 10 m.MarksCount, s.StudentName

FROM Marks AS m

LEFT JOIN Students AS s ON m.StudentID = s.StudentID

ORDER BY m.MarksCount DESC

Do you think a student strike at a university campus could ever happen (be possible) ?

If for instance study conditions didn't improve/made better for students.

Here are some nifty ideas, though who would ever take them seriosuly in the real world.

1. No assignments should have a due date within at least 7 (if not 10) days of other assignment's due date.

2. No Full Time Student undertaking a weight of at least 75% (Three Quarters maximum study load or greater) should have to study for more than the eqvilalent standard hours of full time work (in Australia) which is 38 - 40 hours per week.

3. Students be given financial incentives, et cetera to study at night and on weekends.

4. Students shall be entitled to sick leave after the completion of at least 6 to 9 months of study/enrolment.

5. Student "Ordinance" shall be examined and reviewed in order to make life for students much better in the interests of Student Health, well-being and welfare.

6. University ("Higher Education") staff shall all become subject to "Staff Ordinance" in interests of Student Health/WB.

Do you think a student strike at a university campus could ever happen (be possible) ?
It woudn't work. As a student, you are paying for the service the university provides you. Once you have enrolled and paid your fees, you have accepted the university conditions. They have no obligation to change their policies at this point. Students would be doing themselves a diservice by striking.
Reply:You are lazy if you don't like to be there quit and go to sell hamburgers at McDonald's.
Reply:A nice thought but don't think it would work.
Reply:Education prepares for life and life is not only hard but is a struggle for survival and growth. Now, would you like to go easy at the learning stage and be under the unrelenting harness at the earning stage? If yes, how would you cross over the transition from the smooth and easy to the ruff and tuf! Think over this and your pursuit of education will surely become serious and lot more productive.
Reply:student strike wouldnt work because you've already paid for your classes.
Reply:Of course it can happen. Just read about Columbia and Berkeley during the Vietnam War. There were student strikes all over the USA.

When will the Student Adjustment Act pass?

If you don't know what student adjustment act is

The bill will give states the opportunity to offer undocumented students, who have long resided within their borders, the same in-state tuition rates other legal residents are entitled to receive. It does so by repealing federal restrictions which currently discourage this practice. Further, it will allow these bright and motivated students to qualify for federal student loans and grants so that poverty does not impede their college dreams. Finally, it gives these students the opportunity to reach for the American dream of prosperity and achievement by offering them the chance to legally reside in this country.

now junior so soon senior.. i'm so worried what will happen to me. If this act pass i could get finanical aids but since there isn't any F.AId for nonresidency student i can't. I came here just year before 9/11. so in 2000. and i could call myself a good honor student I want to hear what other people think about this act

When will the Student Adjustment Act pass?
look buddy...i understand how difficult it must be for you but asking the gov't to pay for your college education is not gonna fly well with any law abiding citizen....besides ....if you are an illegal alien then u cannot apply for federal aid anyways....they specifically ask you about your immigration status....and federal aid is only available to US citizens or Permanent residents. Now that i have given you the bad news...here is some good news....many colleges allow undocumented students to apply and study with the in-state tuition rates.....if you can show proof....for example.. a utility bill or a house lease or income tax return u filed using your ITIN number.....they may allow you in-state tuition rate....given ur situation....i would not advise you to apply to private colleges as you willbe unable to pay for it.....i would recommend tryin to get into a community or city college where the in-state tuition is around $2000 per semester....if you work off the books as a waiter or do construction work.....you could afford to go to college.....It aint easy, but its doable.....good luck.....
Reply:No benefits to illegals, bright or not, illegals are criminals.
Reply:Sorry but I second other's opinions. no taxes,no legal status means no benefits. There are some people I know who are legally here on visa's and still dont get the benefits.
Reply:I honestly don't believe that you should be eligible for instate tuition breaks. Only people who are citizens should be eligible for this.

We have a lot of bright students who are citizens of this country and illegals or "undocumented" aliens have no right to a tuition discount, especially when they don't pay taxes.
Reply:Ah yes, give financial aid to illegal students who have broken the law to get it and forget about all the bright American students that slip through the cracks every year because apparently it's not "cool" to actually do anything for the people who pay taxes here. Yep- I am so not into that idea.
Reply:There are only so many funds that can be spent on discounts like in state tuition or other tuition help. When our own children, many of them, can't afford to go to a four year college without going into serious debt (if they can do it at all), I think it is criminal to give in state tuition to people illegally here.

They have already taken education funds from our children's schools to the tune of $10,000 per year for education throughout the time they were here. That is more than enough.

There isn't enough to go around, and we need to take care of our own children first.
Reply:Hopefully - NEVER!

To openly bypass others that very well are more qualified - just because they are not breaking the law - in order to benefit those that are - is wrong.

If such were ever to even seriously get to a point where a vote were to come up on such - every grand/parent, aunt/uncle, young wo/man that are citizens within this country that also have college dreams and a desire to achieve the "American dream" will rise up and revolt over such a travesty.
Reply:Lets hope the nuts in Washington never pass this.
Reply:There are plenty of bright students within US. So I guess I would mildly oppose this act. Whats the point of educating foreign nationals, illegaly residing in US???.. How will US benefit from it???. It will nly give the opportunity for this aliens to claim Green Card, saying as you already invested money in us let us work and pay back.

No!

Student loans...advice needed....my husband has great lakes student loans...what are his options?

Hi...my husband has $80 000 of student loans with great lakes. He thinks he had federal student loans originally and he consolidated them with great lakes but he is totally useless when it comes to finances so i am trying to find out some information.

Are his loans still considered federal loans or as he consolidated are they now private?

Should he/can he reconsolidate his student loans with another company?

Are great lakes a good company?

Does he have any other options to lower his monthly payments?

Any advice would be welcomed. I have never had a student loan so I don't know the territory!

Student loans...advice needed....my husband has great lakes student loans...what are his options?
Student loans can only be consolidated once so his options are pretty limited. About the only thing he can do now is pay on them.... for the next 100 years.

What do university students expect the Student Representative Council to do?

I really need your answers peeps. What's the exact function of the Student Representative Council in a university? Does it meant for voicing out students' rights by managing their complaints only or it should be more than that? What do students expect the Council to do for them? Why do students still keep lamenting about the Council even though many things have been done to improve the university? What exactly should the Council do in order to satisfy every student in the university? Some students just take the Council for granted %26amp; push whatever responsibilities on the Council, is there even a solution for these?

What do university students expect the Student Representative Council to do?
In theory I expect them to be advocates for things that students realistically need and the university should be facilitating, e.g. medical/legal, administrative issues with lecturers, etc.

Some friendly advice to save your head from exploding: you'll never please everyone in a university that has thousands and thousands of students some of whom will whinge no matter if you sprout wings and fly them to and from class.
Reply:A part of this answer depends on what country you are in.

For example in the United States of America the Student Representative Council or University Students Unions often do not manage complaints, or address barriers faced by students. Instead they play a large social role in creating and fostering and developing student life. (Warning: Not all schools are like this).

On the other hand in Canada we have the Canadian Federation of Students which is a national alliance between many student unions across Canada. This allows for many Canadian student unions to collectively lobby, advocate, and pressure government on students issues. For example: health care, min wage, touition, cuts to grants, changes in student loan structure.

They also run campaigns such as a federally organized "No Means No Campaign" addressing date rape on campus or the "Where's the Justice Campaign" educating about systemic barriers faced by Aborigional students attending university. Or during the B.C. elections the B.C. segment ran their own "Rock the Vote" campaign.

In Canada with your student union fees often there is also a health and dental medical benefits plan which students are free to opt out of (if they have alternative coverage).

On my university campus we also have a person within the student union dedicated to helping students through grades appeal processes or acting as an advocate while students interact with the administration.

On a campus level they run a christmas food bank hamper program, three student resource centres (aborigional, pride and womens), the student health plan, one bar, one coffee house, a used bookstore, they provide space for and contract planned parenthood to come in and do a clinic...

I guess I expect my Student Representative Council to be very active on a National, Provincial and Municipal level advocating for student rights. While at the same time also fostering a sense of community and student life on campus.

I don't have high expectations, not at all.

I'm not to familiar with the English system but it is my understanding that they have associations of students unions as well (Note: I am not positive on this one area. Please double check).

If a student teacher gets a D for student teaching, should she just give up and find some other way to make a?

living? By that I mean my friend is very motivated to teach young children, but how to overcome a D in student teaching? The D was for making the students nervous due to her high energy and own nerves, not being concise in her directions to the class and worst of all, following a mom out of the building after a parent-teacher meeting to tell the mom something religious her kid had said in class so the mom would know her religious lessons to her child were getting through, although the teacher had told the student teacher to be a "fly on the wall" in general and just listen. Office staff saw the student teacher talking to the parent, told the supervising teacher, who was quite angry, even though nothing revealing was said to the parent, although there were other things that had happened in the classroom, and been appropriately handled, involving her child and other students that the mom would not have liked to have known, but wasn't told this. Forget teaching, or what?

If a student teacher gets a D for student teaching, should she just give up and find some other way to make a?
She needs to do her student teaching again next semester and learn from her mistakes. She will, most likely, be given a different school and a different cooperating teacher. It sounds as if she has major problems in areas that MUST be rectified before she will be successful as an educator.

1. "the D was for making the students nervous due to her high energy and own nerves" Yes, student teaching is an anxious time and "nerves" will be jangled... BUT... the actual teaching of the students is weeks after the student teacher has entered the classroom and is a gradual process. No cooperating teacher would throw an unskilled student teacher into the mix and say, "sink-or-swim". She should be mature enough to overcome her anxiousness and relieve the nervousness of her students.

2. "not being concise in her directions to the class" This is what a teacher does. I am sorry there is really no such thing as teaching, there is only presentation of information and modeling behavior. As educators, our jobs are to show students how to answer problems on their own, no matter if the problem is basic multiplication tables or how to make positive choices in their daily lives. If your friend is not able to do this consistantly then she is not going to make it as a teacher.

3. The Mom thing- Your friend demonstrated a clear lack of professionalism and inabliity to follow the most basic instructions given to her by her cooperating teacher. There are couple of ways to look at this. (A.) You could see this as a new and inexperienced person who didn't know what to do and made a poor decision. Or... (B.) this is a soon-to-be member of the teaching profession that is on their best behavior and at the top of their game because they are trying to make an outstanding impression to not only the university but also to prospective employers and references. Most people would pick (B.). It seems that this is the choice her cooperating teacher made.

If your friend can't overcome these major issues then yes, I think she should look for another profession. If she has learned from her mistakes and is mature enough to improve then she should not only be willing to do the student teaching over she would be eager to do so.
Reply:I have a friend who is did very badly in student teaching as well. She really loves kids and wants to teach, but it has been a few years and she can only find work in a daycare center.

When you apply for a job, you need transcripts and letters of recommendation. A D isn't going to look good, and I doubt her cooperating teacher will be willing to write anything nice. I'm not going to say she should give up but she has a lot of hardship to overcome.
Reply:Your friend has difficulty in following directions. In a classroom if she does teach there will be no one to advise her. She should consider another career path.
Reply:I would tell her not to give up. When I had difficulty the semester I student taught, someone gave me some great advice-they said that once you have your first job and get a good review, your grade from student teaching will not matter anymore. They were right. I toughed it out and got glowing reviews from my first job and no one ever looked at that grade again! However, I would caution her not to overstep her boundaries anymore and just lay low for the rest of her time student teaching.
Reply:sounds like the master teacher penil screwed her grade in anger. your friend could appeal the mark with the university, or do a second stretch of student teaching with a different master teacher. either way, i would not give up on a goal of teaching as a career. i would take the learning experience, figure out what i could do better next time and move forward. after all-teachers need to be life long learners!!!
Reply:I agree with the answers so far. Your friend should see about redoing student teaching. Your friend must be able to listen and learn. If the student teacher was told not to talk and they did, then there is a problem. When working with teachers and children you must be able to listen and learn. This person/friend does not have all of the answers right now but seems to carry them self as if they do. People frown upon that.
Reply:This is a humbling lesson to those of us going into the profession. I am going to make sure I follow my mentor teacher's instructions to a "t"

1) I would hope her career isn't over. I think that she needs to talk to her school about redoing a student teaching experience to gain that knowledge and learn where she went wrong. Then she can demonstrate she has learned from her mistakes, and prove she can do it.

2) She needs to focus on watching her mentor at work, and doing what is told.

Best of luck to your friend. She will get work.
Reply:It could've been worse. Everyone has a lot to learn no matter what vocation they choose. Teaching is a very rewarding profession as long as the teacher believes that they don't know everything.

Student loans?

I have some questions about student loans?

1. How much can you borrow on a yearly basis for a student loan?

2. Can a person have more than one student loan?

3. Can I use the money to live off campus?

4. Does a person have to be a full time student to get student loans?

Student loans?
i believe it might b different according to the state. u can borrow as much money as u want and take out as much money AS THEY LET U. also depends on which loan. u can have different loans, grants, scholoarships. for question # depends on the loan. most good loans r offered for full time. if u become a part time student u can lose the loan. again it all depends on which loans u want and what the state offers. u need to talk to ur guidance counselor or the colleges' financial aid dept.
Reply:1. They will only let you borrow what you need to cover school expenses.

2. Yes, you can have more than one student loan, but it is uncommon.

3. No, you cannot use the money to live off campus (or at least they won't approve you for that use). You should consider getting a part time job.

4. You do have to be a full time student to get a student loan.

Reply:There are two sources for student loans -- the federal government and private lenders. In order to obtain most federal student loans, you will first need to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In most%26lt;!--instances the FAFSA is required for all federal financial aid including federal student loans. Deferment options are available while you are still attending school at least half-time. There are four main federal loan programs.

Federal loan consolidation is for students who are in repayment status or parents who wish to extend the repayment period on their current PLUS and obtain a fixed interest rate for the life of the loan--%26gt;you can combine all of your eligible federal student loans into one loan with a Federal Consolidation Loan. Consolidating also locks the interest rate you pay on your loan.

Anyone ever discharged federal student loan for special circumstances;false certification/ability to benefit?

Federal student loan discharge question:

At the time the student was enrolled in the school the student did not know they were being signed up for school, They were going to counseling with a psychologist, etc..and also, the school may have signed the student's signature on loan applications etc....

Secondly, this student could not have benefited from going to the school due to their state of mind, physical condition, etc...

The student has received Loan discharge applications for special circumstances, is it likely that their loans will be discharged, and has anyone ever been through this process for special circumstance discharge?

Also will they ever be allowed to borrow federal student loans again? How might this affect the student's credit?

Anyone ever discharged federal student loan for special circumstances;false certification/ability to benefit?
If ANYTHING you say is true, the 'school' is guilty of FRAUD. If that is the case, the loans WON'T be discharged. The 'school' will be liable to repay them.

Student loans and bankruptcy?

Is it at all possible to discharge student loans through bankruptcy? I have about 120K in student loans, and make about 35K a year at my job. My monthly student loan payments are about $1200/mo and I bring home about $2,000 a month. I do not have enough to live on after I pay my student loans and rent. I've racked up significant credit card debt trying to cover my other essential expenses. So, for someone in my case, is it at all possible to discharge student loans through bankruptcy?

Student loans and bankruptcy?
The answer to this is kind of complex. I found a really good resource online, though, at http://www.finaid.org/questions/bankrupt...
Reply:You are the poster child for people who think student loans are a good way to not only get them through college, but live large while they do it, without working and paying as much as they can while in college.

Bankruptcy will not include your student loans and it will ruin your credit. Most lenders can work with you and will be willing to develop payment plans that will fit your budget.
Reply:Don't go for bankruptcy. It will remain on your credit for 7-10 years and during this time you wont get any financial help.

There are many student loan consolidation but all are not good. Always go to them who are legitimate and are BBB online registered. They can reduce the rates by 2% and also lowers the payment by 50%.

Use the generic "he"
Reply:It is probably politically correct to say "he or she," and then use your chosen gender within the context of the letter.

Good luck,

Reply:Yes, you can say "the student" in something like this. You first refer to "a student" because the first sentence is non-specific -- that is, it applies to all students in general. Further on, you are talking about one particular student, the imaginary one you have selected as your interviewee. Therefore, you can refer to him/her as "the student". Hope this helps!
Reply:I will edit your paragraph but if it isn't right I did my best.

When a student is preparing for a job interview, there are several things that can be done to improve the prospective employer's first impression of him, thus increasing the chance for employment.

Confirming the date and details of the scheduled interview is the first step to ensure success. This includes the right time and location where the interview will take place. Knowing the name of the interviewer and the position held within the company is also beneficial. A quick study of what type of industry and the type of service offered by the company the student is applying for shows that he has taken the time to gain knowledge and will show his interest in gaining this employment.

There you are, I don't think you need to know about the building and or office number of the interviewer as you may not work for this individual at all, know what qualifications are required for the position you are applying for. Hope this helped.
Reply:Let me rewrite this paragraph for you:

First, the student should make confirm all details of the interview well before the scheduled date. Then he should check to make sure that the location is correct and there is sufficient. The student should also re-check other last minute details, such as the name of the human resources director or the person intending to conduct the interview and specific addresses, such as a particular building or office number.

Good luck!!
Reply:maybe make the first "student" plural cuz u refer constantly to them or they, which is plural. maybe say student once or twice instead of they or them, and take out the words in the parenthesis
Reply:yes in most cases above they or their works fine....
Reply:I'm a transcription editor. In your opening line, you've already established the following paragraph is referring to students. Make your point more clear and concise. I took the liberty of editing your paragraph:

Reply:Stick with the student. If you use he or she you will offend half the population depending on which one you use. They is plural and doesn't belong in this paragraph.

Student loans for education in atlanta?

i was wondering if i had a student loan in NJ that's defaulted and move to atlanta and apply for a student loan to attend school in atlanta, would i get rejected because of the defaulted student loan i had in NJ?

how do i get another student loan while my other student loan is defaulted and i'm still paying it off?

Student loans for education in atlanta?
If you have a defaulted federal student loan you will be ineligible for any additional federal student loans until your defaulted loan is paid in full or you have made satisfactory repayment options with the guarantee agency. Contact your guarantee agency to determine how to get your loan out of default status. If you don't know who that is you can find it at http://www.nslds.ed.gov/. You will need your federal PIN to access this site. If you don't have one you can get it at http://www.pin.ed.gov/.

If you are looking at private student loans you may be able to qualify, but having a defaulted federal loan will count negatively in the review process. And, if it is approved, your interest rate and fees will probably be pretty high since you are a credit risk. Make life easier on you...take care of your defaulted student loan.
Reply:in Atlanta?

I found the best option here:

http://all-student-loan-consolidation.bl...
Reply:Unfortunately, you will not be able to get another government student loan if you currently have one that is in default status. You need to contact the US Dept of Ed to find out the amount that you are defaulted and make arrangements to take care of it (as it appears that you are doing). Next, a lot of financial aid departments have alternative loans that you may also apply for. Citgroup has a CitiAssist loan that many students who are in default of a federal student loan can apply for. This will secure funds that you can use for school so your education isn't further delayed while you work on your defaulted student loan. Once your loan is our of default status, you will be able to complete a FAFSA and once again qualify for government grants and loans.

What do university students expect the Student Representative Council to do?

I really need your answers. What's the exact function of the Student Representative Council in a university? Does it meant for voicing out students' rights by managing their complaints only or it should more than that? What do students expect the Council to do for them? Why do students still keep lamenting about the Council even though many things have been done to improve the university? What exactly should the Council do in order to satisfy every student in the university? Some students just take the Council for granted %26amp; push whatever responsibilities on the Council, is there even a solution for these?

What do university students expect the Student Representative Council to do?
When I was in college (not too long ago), the ASUN (our version of student council) had a few primary, visible functions:

1) Planning and promoting events for the entertainment, education, and mingling of the student body (incidentally, the largest committee, with the largest budget and most responsibilities)

2) Acting as a liaison between the students and the administration. This goes both ways, allowing the students to have a voice with administration, but also allowing the administration to interface with students in a meaningful way.

3) (and this is semi-cynical) Allowing an opportunity for future politicians to pursue experience in representative government.

With that said, recognize that the students are always going to complain. I mean, look at the bigger picture. People always complain about elected officials, large and small. That's never going to change, and you're never going to satisfy anyone. If you try, you will drive yourself insane.

I think the key to being successful as a representative government is to try to get as many students actively involved as possible. Create commitees, advisory boards, and have a mechanism for allowing students other than the elected council to be part of them.

Agnostics .. What do think of think of this writing? What are the flaws in the argument placed by the student?

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty. He asks one of his new students to stand and.....

Prof: So you believe in God?

Student: Absolutely, sir.

Prof: Is God good?

Student: Sure.

Prof: Is God all-powerful?

Student : Yes.

Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hmm?

(Student is silent.)

Prof: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?

Student :Yes.

Prof: Is Satan good?

Student : No.

Prof: Where does Satan come from?

Student : From...God...

Prof: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?

Student : Yes.

Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything. Correct?

Student : Yes.

Prof: So who created evil?

(Student does not answer.)

Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don't they?

Student :Yes, sir.

Prof: So, who created them?

(Student has no answer.)

Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son...Have you ever seen God?

Student : No, sir.

Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?

Student : No , sir.

Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelled your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?

Student : No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.

Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?

Student : Yes

Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?

Student : Nothing. I only have my faith.

Prof: Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.

Student : Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

Prof: Yes.

Student : And is there such a thing as cold?

Prof: Yes.

Student : No sir. There isn't.

(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)

Student : Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the

opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.

(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)

Student : What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?

Student : You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light.... But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?

Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student : Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student : Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It

uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student : Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)

Student : Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavour, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?

(The class is in uproar.)

Student : Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain?

(The class breaks out into laughter.)

Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelled it?.....No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?

(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Prof: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.

Student : That is it, sir.. The link between man %26amp; god is FAITH. That is all that keeps things moving %26amp; alive.

That young man was ALBERT EINSTEIN.......

Agnostics .. What do think of think of this writing? What are the flaws in the argument placed by the student?
Don't know. Fell asleep half way through thank god.
Reply:What's wrong with the reasoning? Let's see... Faulty attribution? Check! Sophomoric argument? Check! Schmaltzy appeal to emotions? Check! Straw man atheist professor (who no doubt chortles and twirls his moustache when he isn't trying to wreck the faith of his impressionable students)? Double check!

I believe in God, but I wish to Christ the fundies would stop foisting this kind of sentimental appeal masquerading as logical clarity upon the rest of us.

Amen
Reply:Well, it wasn't Albert Einstein! (For one thing, he never studied Philosophy) I wish you had made that clear - this story is fiction, just relgious propoganda of a very crude type - you should have emphasised that, because no doubt there will be people who will accept it at face value.

This is just typical of a load of 'Straw Man' anecdotes circulated by theists. The student's arguments are purile, and the Proffessor is deliberately set up to walk into pseudo logical traps. Pathetic in it's way.
Reply:Can't be bothered to check the story, but it would appear to clear up one thing. Why Einstein had to seek refuge in Switzerland.

It would also appear to confirm the theory that a high IQ is relatively comparable to a low common sense quotient.

Few people like a smart ar** and professors and teachers are particularly susceptible to this trait.
Reply:Ok went through the trouble reading it. The students argument is pretty weak and I think just playing around with words. Ideas are not valid as many like electricity which cannot be seen but can be detected that it exist scientifically. And saying how the prof's science is not totally true doesn't make his god's existence true. Kind of just like changing the subject.
Reply:TLDR (too long didn't read) answers are always funny...

anyway, firstly I'm quite sure I read that it was in fact not a real thing.... and definitely not really einstein.

I'm not agnostic, but I would imagine the agnostic viewpoint, would be that even with those ideas, you still can't observe God's existance affirmatively.

%26gt;%26gt;"ME: We have those terms, because they are used to describe the absence of something else. Therefore to say that God can exist, you would first have to prove to me what his opposite is."%26lt;%26lt;

actually I think the premise of the whole "debate" is that God = Good(light/heat) and Evil = Dark/Cold, debunking the "god is good so the presence of evil is contrary to the idea of an Omniscient, Omnipotent, Omnibenevolent entity.

%26gt;%26gt;"one flaw i came up with after reading it is that regardless of whether or not electricity or magnetism can be seen, they can certainly be tested."%26lt;%26lt;

could color be proven to exist, or be tested by technology developed by a society of people with no functional visual perception at all? even if people in that society started appearing that could perceive it... none of the technology would be designed with parameters to consider color.

its not that it can't be tested, AS SUCH, but that traditional science and the parameters accepted as givens, are such that metaphysics are almost entirely outside the scope of traditional science.

another detail, is that while einstein was jewish by blood, from my understanding his personal beliefs were in more of a distant generic deism sort of line of thought, rather than a religious interactive God.
Reply:Two things on the student's viewpoint. Firstly, the student is being hypocritical in his denounciation of the view of God as a finite entity. By looking closely at his perspective, you can see that he has an existing image of God, limited by his own human perspective and governed by his own mind. He does not have the higher ground on the scientific assignment of properties to concepts because he, by virtue of being of limited mind (as all men and women), practices it.

While the Professor's discussion of science is indeed flawed, the student's is just as much so. Cold, Darkness and the Mind are all realities in the realm of the Idea. Similarly, undeniably, so is God. The lack of physical, tangible form does not deny to an idea its existence. Just like we can be hurt by the words hurled at us by others, so too does the darkness creep, the mind ponder and the cold chill. Concepts are powerful even when they are fiction, and power necessitates existence.

However, I believe this entire work to be fiction trying to pass itself off as fact, and for this I am forced to denounce the whole thing as an attempt at deception. Albert Einstein did not study Philosophy, the Professor is attempting to use "scientific" reasoning in his discussion, and both Professor and Student in this scenario are far too closed to the prospect of the metaphysics of Conceptual Engineering to be in any way related to the study and history of thought. Thanks for the discussion, but that last line was entirely malicious in intent.

Einstein had a profound notion of what God was; much more so than the majority of the evangelical masses would hope to understand. I would appreciate it if he were not used as an advertising tool.
Reply:Wow...

I loved that.

I thought it was a wonderful thing to read.

Thank you very much for posting it...

As to its flaws.... let me think about it and i'll edit my answer when i've come up with some sort of comprehensible logic.

Alright... one flaw i came up with after reading it is that regardless of whether or not electricity or magnetism can be seen, they can certainly be tested. We see it with our own eyes in magnetic substances. For instance, i have these rattlesnake eggs that are magnetic. Although i can't see the magnetic energy, the two objects are pulled together through some inexplicable force. We don't see God in this same way. We cannot hold any two objects together and somehow observe a force of any kind that can be classified as Godly.

Another flaw is the evolution argument. Evolution makes sense because it can be observed. In human beings and in nature. For instance, the evolution of science. We knew very little in the past and evolved into superior intelligent beings with time. And then there's nature. The evolution of land, the continental plates eventually moving away from each other, etc...

But then, after you set aside those flaws... here's my argument.

Love, passion, obsession, pain, sadness, anger...

Those human emotions that cannot be felt by any of the senses. As far as i know, you can't see love, hear love, touch love, smell love, etc... What you can do is feel it. And if you're going to argue that God doesn't exist on the basis that you can't sense it, you have to disqualify every emotion known to man. And who in their right mind would actually do that?

In my 'humble' opinion, trying to disprove the existence of God with science is to attempt to shoot a man with his own gun.
Reply:What is your source for this? There's language and argument in there which are definitely coming from the Christian fundamentalist camp and weren't used during Einstein's day. I seriously have to question the accuracy of the text.

I also deeply bothered by the way the piece uses Einstein's reputation for genius -- if he said it, it must be right, yes?

No. He didn't understand quantum mechanics. He was, at the end of the day, one man, with a finite life and a substantial but finite intelligence.

This writing is tautological. misleading and manipulative.
Reply:Do you really accept that argument?

I can debunk it.

For example take the arguments that Darkness and cold are the absence of something.

ME: you say that darkness is immeasuarable, since it is the absence of light. You say that cold is immeasurable, because it is the absence of heat.

YOU:that is correct

ME: So you say that no proof God exists, is not proof against God?

YOU:That is correct.

ME: So we have no darkness only absence of light, and we have no thing as cold, only absence of heat?

YOU: That is correct.

ME: So what is the opposite polarity of God?

YOU: (Dumbfounded), what?

ME: We have those terms, because they are used to describe the absence of something else. Therefore to say that God can exist, you would first have to prove to me what his opposite is.

YOU: I don't understand, I just copy web pages into questions in Yahoo
Reply:These rhetorics are based on given and unproven heritage from war between religion and science ...

I would in the same way ask : "Is it science that is guiding G.W.Bush to do the mess he is doing around the globe, or is it faith ?"...

And... by all means ... how did Albert Einstein's fantastic discoveries have contributed to make this world more peaceful ???

The most beautiful thing in your text is that it gives the proof that the human mind is great whether it is oriented to religion or to science.
Reply:yes a logical argument, and the professor got punked.

Now if you do further readings on Einstein you will find out that his God is the God of Spinoza, and not the big guy in sky god.

He makes the point very clear with his statement of the invalidity of dicotomy.

But this is still not a proof of god.

It is only a proof that such argument depends upon faith and not reason.

Also as an aside evolution is observable and is a continuing process, it was just not well enough researched or recorded at the time of Einstein. And even when Darwin wrote his theory of how selection and variation might give rise to species nothing was known of genetics. We have learned much more. This has resulted in not only better theories but better proofs. Many people get confused about facts and theory. Light is an observable fact. There are many theories about how it works. The most useful theory is counted as the truest. There are very strict rules about how to vaidate a theory.

In Science, unlike religion, there are no absolute truths.

Just best guesses so far.

edit:

I do not believe your story to be true. it has too many features of fiction, the reading of the professor's mind by the author, the reactions of the student, the triteness of the composition.

you should be crediting the author.

I would like to know who the preacher who wrote it was.
Reply:Einstein would never have said any of this because he didn't believe in God. Here is a real quote from Einstein:

“It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it.”
Reply:You mean as in the flaw of the equivocation the student uses w/r/t hot %26amp; cold, light %26amp; dark?

Or the student's odd notions about empiricism requiring direct sight, sound, taste, touch, or smell, whereas things that aren't directly observable can still be accurately measured through their action upon their environment?

Or the said little claim, that religion must be true if there's anything science can't explain? Or that some smart alec kid's belief that there's no evidence for various scientific ideas stems from his utter failure as a student to do any research, and that that somehow abbrogates the need to provide any actual evidence of his own?

Or that both characters are straw men, designed to serve a role that only works if you already agree with the student?

Or that this story is designed for no purpose than to play on the faithful's vanity rather than reach anyone outside of the faith, and to explain away an apparent conundrum that the only the faithful have (ie, why do bad things happen to good people)?

Or the fact that this entire story is false?
Reply:that's a pretty good arguement. quite alike the belief that nothing exists, if no one is there to experience it. a tree falling in the woods doesnt exist, unless something is there to experience it... it only exists to that which experiences it. so i guess if someone experiences a god, then that god exists for that person. works for me.

the only flaw i can think of in einstein's theory with the professor's brain, is that if you open up the head of the professor, revealing the brain, then that brain would then exist. but you cant open anything to reveal a god... at least not today. we dont have the technology to do so. maybe in the future we will have the technology to finally sense a god, but as for right now, no god exists. i dont exist to you, and you dont exist to me. but your question and my answer both exist.

nothing wrong with faith. trying to say something exists, without everyone experiencing it is wrong though, in my opinion. good question :)

heh, just found out that the whole story is false... still a good arguement. :)
Reply:Bit long for Yahoo! answers but it's not your own so hey.

Problems with the student's argument? WEll it does demonstrate the age old feud very well but there are some discrepancies. Firstly the duality absence cannot really be cmpared to God because there is no measurable thing in the Universe that can be said to be either product of a god or lack of such god. While indeed lack of heat cannot really be measured or thought of conceptually, how do we find a duality to apply to theism?

This is the age old problem of these two schools, between the scientists and the theists. If you disprive one school using the methods of your own school then your excercise is useless. Example: Using logic to disprove god such as in this demonstration. Because the foundations of each school are built on largely incompatible methods of thought and oppinion the opposite school's philosophy holds no meaning over the other. And neither school is without both realms of thought, logic and faith. Scientists see mounds of evidence left behind from the ancient world about evolution, but they msut have faith. Not in evolution, but in the idea that physical proof and evidence equals truth. Same deal with the professor's brain, physical evidence exists that it is there and when he dies his head can be cut open to present more evidence, but scientists must take the evidence they have and trust in the process of evidence and matter as a foundation for truth.

Similary theists rely on proof all the time. Their holy text for example, seen as the word of their god or the teachigns of their deity are filled with examples of miracles and events shaped directly by that god. They quote it to back up their beleifs. And asking scientists to discount faith in their methods of science because it is the realm of theism is to ask religious people to give up their holy texts and churches because it is evidence and the realm of science.

Human beings are creatures of both rational thought and beleif in what they cannot prove exists. If we did not have both these qualities warring within us there would not be the conflict that we see every day, particulary on here. Over the course of our lives we choose sides or some of us abstain depending on what we feel is closer to our personal beliefs, but still it keeps going. As an atheist I came to this because I feel a closer affinity to what I can prove exists, but more importantly I feel that organized religion not only contradicts many beleifs held by religious people but causes much harm and dissension amoungst people and I wish to form my own beliefs aobut the world and oppinions aobut others without being beholden to anyone else, whoever it may be: preacher, Pope or even a man that lived 2000 years ago. I choose what to beleive in and I'm accountable for that. But I don't begrudge people who have faith in things they can't prove are there. I can't prove where electrons are or that that evolution happened. But I believe they're there. And I tihnk the best way forward right now is for people to agree to disagree. That's all. No hating of the "heathen" or picketing those with different lifestyles then the ones you were brought up on, no spitting venom at people "blind" to your thinking. Agree to disagree.
Reply:ALBERT EINSTEIN, wasn't a Christian!

Where did you find this made up garbage?

That argument is totally flawed, all those things can either be measured or experienced, your god can not be.

Oh, you can produce all the love chemicals in your brain, you want and pretend that it's god, but your only fooling yourself.
Reply:Wow! I had fun reading it. Well, about the flaw, I had one.

The boy here is telling the proffesor that evil is not the opposite of good rather it is the absence of good as he explain it using the heat and old and light and dark. And the world is filled with Immorality, Hatred, suffering and other evil things, doesn't that make God absence in the world? Since God is Good! But then there is still goodness in the world...where does it came from? Isn't it from ourselves?

If you don't agree then are you telling me that we are not good? Humans are not good? That we need God to be good?

I know that the thing about the brain is a joke so no problem with that!
Reply:Well whether or not iit was Einstien its a good arguement I've heard it before. Athiests can't stand being told that they might be wrong. well done.
Reply:But Albert Einstein didn't believe in God!

In any case the student's argument is ridiculous. There is evidence for evolution. We know people have brains in their heads because of autopsies. The student does not once evince a positive argument for God
Reply:Holy ****, I didn't think I was going to read the whole thing, but it was good - I really liked it and thanks for posting it. Albert Einstein never hit me - WOW - that's crazy / awesome. He was one smart cookie! CRAZY!
Reply:Just in case anyone missed it, the whole thing is a lie which is a pretty big flaw in my opinion, but a very typical one when it comes to religious argument.

When you take away the lies there's nothing left and, therefore, this question doesn't exist.

I see that dishonesty exists and I recognise it as Christian.

The logical extension of the argument is that since knowledge exists, ignorance doesn't, which I'm sure is a great comfort for fools.
Reply:The student's argument is basically sound, given what the professor has said. However, the story doesn't really get us anywhere with regards to the question of God's existence, because the professor's argument is so weak. Of all the arguments against the existence of God, those raised by the professor are right down there with the sorts of things children argue about in the school playground on the same issue.

The story is basically a ditty in favour of God, and certainly not a true story - how many professors do you know who would deliberately set themselves up in this way, and be that obnoxious (picking on a Christian student to crticise their beliefs) while surely knowing that they had a useless argument? Also, while Einstein WAS religious (he struggled for much of his life to reconcile his belief in God with the implications of his own research into quantum theory), he was never a particularly focussed student, and famously only an average one, so the chances of him producing such an eloquent and cutting rebuttal as a young man would have been unlikely (all his life Einstein was shy of speaking up if he didn't have to).

The internet is full of stories like this which purport to demonstrate some kind of truth but are really just rhetorical tricks. For a proper look at the issues around God's existence or lack of it, look up Bertrand Russell's debates with Father Copleston (below).

I am a college student who took a summer calculus class?

Here are two students grades and their weights. Please tell me what grade should be given to Student A and Student B. An A is 94-100, A- is 90-93, B+ is 87-89.

Weights:

Quiz: 25%

Test 1: 10%

Test 2: 15%

HW (total): 15%

Final Exam: 35%

Student A Scores:

Quiz: 100%

Test 1: 76%

Test 2: 90%

HW (total): 56%

Final Exam: 94%

Student B Scores:

Quiz: 90%

Test 1: 76%

Test 2: 88.75%

HW (total): 93.8%

Final Exam: 88.5%

I am one of the students. I received a higher calculated grade than the other student, but the other student received a higher final grade which I believe is due to favoritism. Please let me know what you think or any advice. Thanks, everyone.

I am a college student who took a summer calculus class?
this is simple arithmetic...if you can't do this, you don't even qualify for a C in calculus

use the raw scores of the tests %26amp; quizzes, not the percent scores
Reply:I hate calculus. I also took Calc. over the summer and only got a D. I was too busy writing my novel (over 800 pages) about the devil causing the fall of Ancient Atlantis.
Reply:The only logical reason that I can think of is because of your lower scores on Test 2 and the Final.

Yeah, you got a much higher score in the homework field, but homework isn't really a true measure of what you know about the material. You received B's and C's on your exams...the other person received A's. Why is it so hard to understand?

Two students are discussing spam. Student A says that spam threatens privacy but not security. Student B says?

that most forms of spam are illegal. Who is correct?

A. Only Student A

B. Only Student B

C. Both Students

D. Neither students

Two students are discussing spam. Student A says that spam threatens privacy but not security. Student B says?
Student B. The Cann Spam Act sets the guidelines. If an email complies with this Law it is not spam. So, any email that breaks the Cann Spam Act is spam and thererfore, illegal.
Reply:B. is not the right answer. I had the same homework. I chose B, and the answer was wrong. I dont have the right answer with me because I have to re-do the homework and get the correct answer. But, it's either A or D. Still reading about spam in my textbook. Report It

What percentage of teacher/student affairs tend to be male teacher/female student and vice versa?

I was chatting to a friend of mine online and, inspired by an episode of Buffy, we started talking about student/teacher relationships. He thinks that female teacher/male student is more common, thereby making them less shocking. (There was also a feminist reason, but we won't go into that.) I believe that male teacher/female student is more common and gets more press coverage, and the media adds more stigma through this coverage. But who's right?

So: what percentage of teacher/student affairs are male teacher/female student and what percentage are female teacher/male student? And, while we're on the topic, what percentage are male teacher/male student or female teacher/female student?

What percentage of teacher/student affairs tend to be male teacher/female student and vice versa?
Actually, I would disagree with both... trust me when I say male teachers (especially those in their 20's) involved with female students is MUCH more common. And provided that the female is over the age of 16, which is the age of consent in the majority of states, it isn't seen as that abnormal or perverted (except by the juvenial minds on this site). That is why the media focuses on the female students. Think about it, I can name two infamous ex-teachers (lafave and mary kay latourno--granted the latter is misspelled) right off the top of my head..but try to think of one male teacher that isn't from your state. Unfortunately there aren't statistics done, since the nature of the relationships are illegal..however, the associated press published an article in Oct. estimating that 1 out of every 5 students in the US has had a sexual relationship with a teacher..but they're including everything from mere conversation to intercourse. In England, where student/teacher relationships were JUST outlawed in 2003 (apparently all of a sudden it has become morally wrong), Pat Sikes, a professor of education, who incidently married the man she met when she was 14--he was her 22 year old history teacher, estimates that 1,500 relationships per year in England begin. Let me end it on this..young male teachers with older female students, though not the majority of relationships, is not as rare as most people believe. Perhaps it is because women do in fact mature faster than guys. OR we can instead prescribe to the general public's belief that teachers have this mystical, magical power of persuasion, and the poor teenagers who spend their weekends drinking and smoking marijuana, have no ability to decide for themselves.
Reply:I should imagine female teacher/male student is more common, as people don't show too much concern over it. Whereas, if a male teacher gets involved with a female student the public start screaming for him to be hung, drawn and quartered.

Another example of modern unfairness.
Reply:all of teh female lecturer in uni are too old

What do you guys think of this post, a real conversation between an Atheistic professor and his student?

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty. He asks one of his new students to stand and.....

Prof: So you believe in God?

Student: Absolutely, sir.

Prof: Is God good?

Student: Sure.

Prof: Is God all-powerful?

Student: Yes.

Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hummmm???

(Student is silent.)

Prof: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?

Student: Yes.

Prof: Is Satan good?

Student: No.

Prof: Where does Satan come from?

Student: From...God...

Prof: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?

Student: Yes.

Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything. Correct?

Student: Yes.

Prof: So who created evil?

(Student does not answer.)

Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don't they?

Student: Yes, sir.

Prof: So, who created them?

(Student has no answer.)

Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son...Have you ever seen God?

Student: No, sir.

Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?

Student: No, sir.

Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, and smelled your

God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?

Student: No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.

Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?

Student: Yes.

Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?

Student: Nothing. I only have my faith.

Prof: Yes. Faith! And that is the problem science has.

Student: Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

Prof: Yes.

Student: And is there such a thing as cold?

Prof: Yes.

Student: No sir. There isn't.

(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)

Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.

(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)

Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?

Student: You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light.... But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and its called darkness, isn't it? In reality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness - darker, wouldn't you???

Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one.

Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)

Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavour, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?

(The class is in uproar.)

Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain?

(The class breaks out into laughter.)

Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelled it? ....No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable

protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?

(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Prof: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.

Student: That is it, sir... The link between man %26amp; god is FAITH. That is all that keeps things moving %26amp; alive.

That young man was ALBERT EINSTEIN.......

Reply:The problem is that the brain of the professor hasn't been searched for. Faith is accepting that there is an end to the experimental possibilities. We have senses which are far more developed than the 5 classical ones, such as intuition and FAITH. If those aren't counted as senses, then the world's view of someone is limited. Faith is a sense that the human being has, such as the tasting sense.
Reply:I can answer easily. I see evolution all the time. down at the pond. It happens over a period of a couple of weeks. the tadpoles turn to frogs......micro evolution. If you have small changes over small amounts of time (weeks, or months) then you can have large changes over larger amount of time...macro evolution.

If you have one you must have the other, for there would no reason to name or distinguish between the two.
Reply:Your scenario has some good points but then when you go advertise for your Krishna religion you get off the track. In your scenario of Einstien it has to be noted that in real life he never envisioned God to be as you propose. You are hijacking Einstien's view of God to introduce yours. Unfortunately your religious foundations are not based on very much proven reality but more mythical stories without regard for historical, geographical or artifactial accuracy nor historical eyewitness accounts as the Bible offers. When it comes to being a vegetarian, its ok to promote that but don't use the Bible to mistranslate "you shall not murder" to mean you cannot kill an animal to eat it as some of your fellow followers have told me. Here again is another example of hijacking, in this case trying to use the Bible to support your views. The Bible clearly tells that even though man first was a vegetarian that later after the world flood, God commanded that man could eat animals for the most part. He even required some animals to be sacrificed as a measure of devotion to Him and to serve the purpose of feeding the priests in addition to grain and oil offerings in olden times. If your religion will not stand alone without using someone elses (using the Bible) to validate it then maybe you need to find another one. Why not pick up a Bible and read it for yourself and not just the parts that your leaders tell you to use?
Reply:that's a good story, although i doubt it's validity. Unfortunately, I'm going to report you for advertising your site. This is a Q%26amp;A site, not an advertisement site for your particular agenda.
Reply:Sounds like a good fictional story.
Reply:Isn't jerkoff having a hissy fit...As for the tadpole bit from the other guy, that is called infancy to adulthood. No matter what any living creature becomes, it has to begin in infancy. Even we looked like a tadpole in our mother's womb at one point.
Reply:I like it.

Really doesnt matter who the student was, its how the dialogue put things into perspective.
Reply:How very contrived... Which Chick Tract did you rip that out of?

By the way, those arguments are non sequiturs.
Reply:“If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs it would be Buddhism.”

A Genuine quote from Albert Einstein.

There is no evidence that this exchange ever took place.

This eRumor has circulated without Einstein's name and someone added it to a version that started circulating in the summer of 2004.

Also, it is not likely that young Einstein would have presented this argument.

In his Autobiographical Notes, he states that even though his Jewish family was not religious, he developed a "deep religiosity" as Jewish child that came to an end when he was 12.

He says he developed a skeptical attitude that never left him.

He made reference to "God" on many occasions but also said he did not believe some of the stories in the Bible and did not believe in a personal God.

What you said is total b_____ see the link below
Reply:Sounds perfect! I mean perfect in the sense that the convo. moves really smoothly and accurately.

The student (Einstein?) proves his point in a very forceful, spear-heading way :P
