Student kept on saying Napolean needs to "Step His Game Up." Any definitions?

My class at HS #342 in the Upper East Side had a discussion the other day about the Napoleonic Wars...It was very heated with some students acting out some of Napoleon Bonaparte's famous speeches to his troops which quickly turned into a debate. Well suffice to say one student was upset about Napolean's bonehead move to take on the British at Waterloo...Sorry for all the backgound, but one student keep saying "that Napolean needs to Step his Game up" not once but about 5 times, sometimes he'd say "Step your game up" or "step it up" i think it has something to do with the strange uniforms that the French wore, well at least the boots...any ideas? I dont like going into class clueless!

He would also yell out "S-Y-G-U!!!"

I hear slang from my middle school kids at church and it can be a challenge to understand the new phrase of the week. When I last checked "step up" was similar to "take it to the next level" or simply "try harder."

It probably comes from sayings like "step up to the challenge" where you will have to work hard, do your best and perform well. It can be found in sports, as in "you need to step up your performance," or simplified to "step up your game!"

So in your student's opinion if Napoleon had stepped his game up he would have planned better and not gone after the British at Waterloo.

Although by the time someone reads this it could now mean Napoleon should have worn heels to look taller.
Reply:hehe, funny...
Reply:stepping it up means........give more of yourself!! be stronger, give it all you got!! : )
