Malaysia Government Student Loans (ptptn)?

Is PTPTN the only student loan available from the government?

Also, my friend qualified for almost $10,000.00 USD student loan from the Malaysian Government.

I thought the government only loans out to students who come from lower to average income families?

And regarding repayment of these loans: Is it true you can't leave the country until the entire amount is paid for?

If my friend who comes from a wealthy family took out a government student loan and is still repaying it, does that mean my friend might be lying to me about coming from a wealthy family?

My friend said she refused to have her parents to pay for her university education, so she took a government loan. If you are wealthy, wouldn't you take a loan from the bank instead?

I thought all government student loans are for lower to average income families?

My friend's parents are wealthy, so how was this possible?

Malaysia Government Student Loans (ptptn)?
That is the problem with malaysian politicians. Loans and other helps should be given to poor people irrespective of race or religion. Thanks for asking the question. Hope the government change the policies.
Reply:malaysian government is a corrupt government. anything as ridiculous as it may be, can and will happen in malaysia.

as for the loan, i have known of someone who has been in australia for 16 YEARS and still studying... on MARA support. i have also known of a couple dudes who just refuse to return home so they can get away with the "loan" repayment. that is... if they ever have to pay the money back.

if you dont have good connections in the government, my advice is apply for loans or scholarships from private institutions. dont rely on the government to support deserving people. malaysian taxpayers' money is, and has always, and will only be spent on unnecessary ridiculous matters. at least if you get private fund, you dont have to worry about working for useless government agencies when you finished studies.
Reply:First, PTPTN is not the only available loan available to student. MARA and JPA have theirs respectively. So does other states who gave out loans to qualified students in their states.

Second : PTPTN gives out loans to those who applied regardless of family financial status. it is the govt's way of caring about its citizens' education (take note: not all parents would pay for their children's educations).

Third : Thats not true you can leave the country even if u havent paid the full amount. But seriously, ethically, only ingrates run away from their debts.

Fourth : If someone lied about their financial status and decided to apply although they dont need it, the losing one is the applicant because they are gonna get stuck with a loan after school ends. p/s who knows if your friend is lying to you?

You dont - we surely dont too!

Fifth - Even if my family is wealthy i would take the PTPTN loan instead of the bank. Have you ever heard of interest rates?

Sixth - Govt student loans ideally ARE for those from lower-average income families but if someone lied, seriously, why would the govt waste money and energy knocking the door of each applicant to see if they reside at squatter's area or a villa on top the hill?

Seventh - the concept is simple, you ask, you get, you pay back.

taaaa.....
Reply:how can that be?i am from a quite high income family but with lots of siblings in uni and school, i only got rm500 per semester of ptptn loan..so are my other siblings..ptptn is given based on the income of the family..some get rm2500 per semester,rm1500 or in some cases like mine, only rm500 per semester..
Reply:Good question, you should post this question to the PTPTN %26amp; Cc. government education ministry and the PM. besides your friend for a more detailed report.

I agree with chesney c %26amp; *petals*
Reply:Government loan is primarily meant for students who come from the not to well to do family however the approval of loans is not transparent at all and has been abused by certain party to their advantage. Those who able to get "connected" with someone in the assessment committe will get the loan. You can try but don't put too much hope on it. Many are scrambling for this loan because the interest charged is very much lower than those charged by banks.

The default rate for government loan is very high. Most students don't even bother to pay up their loans even after a few years started working and many of them are professionals and some have already achieve success in the corporate world. There is no such truth that you cannot go overseas before settling your loan.

I don't think your friend was lyting to you. She probably is from wealthy family. You know even wealthy people like to take this loan because the interest is so small and if their children study overseas opt to stay there to work, they probably default the repayment or perhaps wait for several years to pay up. The parents are able to save up a lot and they could use the sum saved for their investment or businesses and in many instances these students from wealthy family who received the loan did not use it to finance their studies but instead use the money for shopping.
